Details

Our organization, The Black Birth Project, is dedicated to addressing racial inequities in reproductive healthcare and supporting Black birthing people and their families. However, we are currently facing funding challenges that limit our ability to expand our programs and impact.

We would like to collaborate with students to find and complete grant applications.

This will involve several different steps for the students, including:

  • Familiarizing themselves with our vision statement, mission, and a defined project focused on improving reproductive health outcomes for Black communities.
  • Developing a needs statement that characterizes the community problem and justifies the need for our project and funding.
  • Identifying potential sponsors and funding opportunities that are a good fit for our organization and project.
  • Improving the clarity and persuasiveness of our grant proposal writing to increase our chances of securing funding.

Bonus steps in the process would also include:

  • Identifying new opportunities for community projects that align with our mission and values.
Deliverables

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:

  • Understanding of The Black Birth Project’s values, mission, and purpose.
  • Understanding of the defined community project and its funding needs.
  • Identification of potential sponsors and funding sources that align with our goals.
  • Recommendations for improving the clarity, structure, and persuasiveness of our grant proposals.

Bonus steps would include:

  • Defining new community project ideas with appropriate scopes that support our mission.

Final deliverables should include:

  • A grant writing template and system that our team can use for future applications.
  • A catalogue of grant opportunities suitable for our organization and projects.
  • At least 2–3 completed grant applications per student by the end of the project.

The Black Birth Project is a community research and advocacy organization focused on improving reproductive health outcomes for Black people in Canada. Our mission is to harness the narratives of Black birthing persons to support service improvements in reproductive healthcare spaces. By providing education to both patients and providers, we plan to support Black birthing people in taking charge of their health while also reducing instances of provider bias.
